It's hard to know if Jonathan Niel or Joe Kolbow actually like opera, a pretty strong condemnation of a show with this title. Sat., Theatre in the Round, 245 Cedar Av. Gary Briggle and Joshua Hinck offer exemplary support. Norah Long delivers a career-high performance as an unhappy, unfulfilled wife, her soprano capturing both the character's despair and her rage. But there is an emotional sameness to much of the score, and the libretto is overly narrative, rather than dramatic. In this companion piece to last year's "Untold Lies," Jim Payne and Robert Elhai embody the lonely, bitter, desperate lives of Sherwood Anderson's classic stories in "Winesburg, Ohio." The subtle, nuanced text is amplified by delicate, gossamer music. Sat., Huge Improv Theater, 3037 Lyndale Av. Barker masters it all with velocity in this terrifying inquiry into the essence of malevolence. Visceral descriptions of his brother-in-law's mental cruelty and stylized re-enactments of his physical brutality mix with touching portrayals of other family members. Recounting savagery inflicted on his sister by her millionaire brain-surgeon husband, Barker's body cuts through space with a dynamic physicality that seems to just barely contain his own outrage. Writer/actor David Barker boldly confronts the problem of domestic violence in this devastating solo performance directed by Ben Tyler. While Ford himself is not a dynamic performer (and trips over his fair share of words), McIver's acting adds talent to the real star: the compelling story itself. Ford plays himself, telling the story directly to the audience in a very matter-of-fact manner, while creative Matthew McIver fills in with the rest of the characters in short scenes amid narration.

Robert John Ford tells a real- life crime story of his friendship (if you could call it that) with serial killer Andrew Cunanan, who started his 1997 six-victim spree in Minneapolis and ended it by killing fashion icon Gianni Versace in Miami Beach. The acting and especially the singing were frequently ragged (they did not do justice to the clever songs), but this did not detract from the charmingly slapdash nature of the production. With outlandish plot twists, swashbuckling sword fights, a pedophilic governor, a lesbian pirate queen and bawdy puns on the likes of chest, rack and bush, this musical by Daniel Pinkerton and Chris Gennaula is inspired silliness.
